Day 11 - 06 August 2024 - Renner Springs to Katherine - 499 km

Dave and Neil noticed four Goggomobils parked at their motel the previous night. This morning, they had the chance to chat with Bob, one of the owners. Bob explained that the four Goggomobils, including one Dart model, were on a 3,000 km journey from Darwin to Adelaide for a Goggomobil gathering. He also mentioned two engine options for Goggomobils: the standard 300cc 2-stroke engine or the ‘big block’ 400cc 2-stroke engine. All four of their vehicles were equipped with the ‘big block’ version. Dave and Neil pointed out that their motorcycle engines were three times the capacity of the ‘big block’ models, but Bob was unimpressed. The Goggo convoy covers about 300 km a day. By the time the Goggo group reaches Adelaide, Dave and Neil will likely have finished their journey through Western Australia, passed through Adelaide, and be in Victoria. After wishing Bob and his crew a successful trip, Dave and Neil headed north toward Katherine.

The road to Katherine was an adventure in itself, with sections that were a bit bumpy. However, it was nothing that couldn't be managed at 110 km/h. The thought of hitting some of those bumps at 130 km/h added a touch of excitement to the journey.

They encountered cattle near the road and spotted another snake. Since leaving Karumba, they haven’t seen a live kangaroo, which they’re pretty happy about.

About 100 km from Katherine, Dave and Neil made a slight detour to the inviting Mataranka Hot Springs. The sight of the springs was a tempting invitation, but the anticipation of a relaxing dip later added a pleasant eagerness to the journey.

Dave and Neil overtook several three- and four-trailer road trains throughout the day. These 50+ meter vehicles are impressive, and the drivers were all aware and courteous when being passed.

Dave and Neil arrived at the Tindal RAAF Base, where they will stay for two nights.
