    Day 8 - 03 August 2024 - Cairns to Karumba - 754 km

Imagine the thrill of the open road, the roar of your motorbike beneath you, and the breathtaking landscapes of Queensland unfolding before your eyes. Riding from Cairns to Karumba in a single day offers adventure, challenge, and the unforgettable experience of traversing some of Australia's most stunning and remote scenery. After a well-earned rest day, Dave and Neil depart Cairns for Karumba.

Neil and Dave set off from Cairns in the midst of a steady rain, heading towards Malanda. The road, though in good shape, was marred by a section between the end of Route 24 and the start of Route 1, which most vehicles would wisely avoid due to significant potholes. The clear weather would have certainly enhanced the scenic beauty of the journey.

Their first stop for fuel was at Mount Garnet, where the options were limited to Diesel or 91. Dave, opting not to fill up, took a chance. Fortunately, the weather cleared up, and the rest of the journey was completed under clear blue skies.

Next, they stopped at Undara Volcanic National Park. The campsites looked inviting, and the couple who had just completed the tour mentioned that the scenery and the guide's commentary were breathtaking. Unfortunately, Neil and Dave didn't have time to wait for the next tour, so they left the park, inspired to return and experience the views.

Their journey continued with a fuel and lunch stop in Georgetown, followed by a refuel for Neil in Croydon. They took a break in Normanton, where they met Kim, a fellow rider on his third solo journey around Australia and his second on a BMW R80. They had a great conversation with Kim, who humorously referred to his bike as Dave's great-grandfather, creating a sense of camaraderie among the travellers.

Aside from the potholed section, the roads were in good condition, with only occasional encounters with roaming animals, including small kangaroos, as they neared Karumba.
