Day 17 - 12 August 2024 - Port Hedland to Exmouth 770 km

Neil and Dave's journey from Port Hedland to Exmouth took an unexpected turn when their GPS led them to a closed road. This unforeseen obstacle prompted them to switch to a second GPS application, resulting in a 20-minute detour. Despite this hiccup, they continued their adventure undeterred.

They were captivated by the sight of vibrant red Sturt's Desert Pea flowers, a stunning contrast against the roadside. Taking a break, they seized the opportunity to capture the beauty of these unique blooms, a moment that would stay with them throughout their journey.

Arriving in Karratha, Neil and Dave were greeted by the need to refuel and by the warm company of Neil's long-lost friend, Barry. After nearly two decades apart, the trio had a lot to catch up on, and they cherished the time they spent together. Their brief exploration of Karratha left them with a fond impression, adding it to their list of places to revisit.

Leaving Karratha, they continued their journey to the Nanutarra Roadhouse for another refuelling stop and a stretch. While there, they talked with the proud parents of an Air Force officer stationed at Tindal.

As Neil and Dave journeyed towards Exmouth from Nanutarra, they were treated to a diverse and breathtaking landscape. The scenery transitioned from flatlands with short vegetation to dunes and striking rock formations, each view more stunning than the last. Their anticipation grew as they neared their destination, marked by a monument at the intersection of Burkett and Minilya/Exmouth Roads.
